PDP has not zoned out any aspirant in Akwa Ibom – Don Etiebet
The crisis rocking the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over the zoning of its governorship ticket, deepened Thursday, as a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees and former Minister of Petroleum, Chief Don Etiebet asked members of the party in the state to disregard stories making the rounds that the governorship ticket had been zoned to the Eket Senatorial Zone of the state by the party’s National Working Committee.
Chief Etiebet said he had made enquiries at the national headquarters of the party and that the report was total falsehood. He said though there was an endorsement by the party, the primaries is open to all, as the party did not exclude any aspirant from other Senatorial zones of the state.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, had said the party expected that “only aspirants from Eket Senatorial Zone will present themselves for the governorship primary election in the state.”
Etiebet said he personally spoke to the party National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, his Deputy, Uche Secondus and they all said no to exclusion of other aspirants.
“They said it did not preclude in the spirit of democracy, in the spirit of giving all Nigerians a level playing field to participate, in the spirit of proper internal democracy and in the spirit of having a popular candidate, who can win the election for the party.
“Therefore, I call on every eligible aspirants from any senatorial district of Akwa-Ibom state, who wants to aspire to be the governor of Akw-Ibom state, to go ahead to mobilize their supporters, and make sure that they win their delegates, because nobody is going to preclude them from taking part in this exercise,” Mr. Etiebet said.
